“Michigan Mud was great. I met some nice people and really enjoyed the presentations, demos and B-B-Q. I learned a lot and had a good time. . . . Thanks to Albion College for such excellent hospitality,” wrote Joe Szutz. New members and first time MI Mud attendees Charlene and Wade Harris echoed his praise: “It was a delightful two days and would be hard to pinpoint what we enjoyed most. The educational aspect of the demonstrations/lectures was well beyond our expectations and we enjoyed each presenter's program. In addition to the programs, we found the other attendees friendly and helpful and learned a bit from talking to some we met at the conference.”

It is evident that Michigan Mud 2005 at Albion College in October was a rousing success, thanks to the efforts of Lynne Chytilo, her excellent committee, the fabulous presenters and all the board members and volunteers who worked on the event. Participant Maggie Trzcenski summed it up nicely: “I can't say enough about the potters. What struck me most was the organization of the events, the set up of the events, and the campus lunch each day. The food was wonderful. It didn't take long to be comfortable everywhere I went to view the artists at work. Good for all of you who put this together.”

Thanks also to all who donated or purchased cups at our fund-raising sale. We raised $2277 for CERF, which helps artists and crafts people who need emergency relief. Kudos to Stephanie, Ron and Barb from Rovin Ceramics for organizing and running the sale for this worthy cause in a time of so many national emergencies.

Presentations covered many aspects of ceramic construction, decoration and firing techniques, including tours of Ken Shenstone’s anagama kiln and a “Fire Sculpture,” which was a fitting climax to the Friday night barbecue (pictured above left). Exhibits of presenters’ and Michigan college students’ work rounded out the experience. In keeping with MCAA’s goal of encouraging new ceramic artists, the student exhibit was juried by guest presenter Linda Christianson and prizes were awarded to nine students.

On both days of MI Mud, participants could watch Linda Christianson, the Featured Presenter of Michigan Mud 2005, including throwing demonstrations, slide presentation and discussion of her commitment "to make a better cup each day"
